My philosophy and goals for teaching focuses on experiential teaching or active learning, which allows me to bring my research into the classroom. Designing courses and coursework that engage through experience maximize the learning potential for the students. I try to accomplish these by following three main ideas: 1) Engage the students. Whether the class is large or small, participation by students is vital to the learning process. Generating interest in the material through specific applied examples and experiences of the general ideas make material more palatable for the students. 2) Design coursework that allows exploration. Through exploration and experience, students achieve a higher understanding of the material. 3) Focus lectures to convey a clear point. By designing each lecture around a few key points, the course ideas are clearly conveyed in bite size pieces. Biogeochemistry, chemical oceanography, coastal oceanography, modeling
