A key component of teaching is to instill a sense of confidence to the students. For engineering education, confidence is to be established through continued success in learning and problem solving. Rooted upon the foundation of mathematics and physics, one can have the strength and confidence to tackle difficult engineering problems. Therefore I emphasize on the fundamentals before proceeding to advanced topics in teaching an engineering course. Furthermore, repeated practice of problem solving and idea generating are the branches and leaves that constitute a tree. I believe that building a good tree is a process requiring many years’ effort from both the students and the teachers. The satisfaction one gains from this process is witnessing the growth. Optimizing a fast and healthy growth is a lifetime and challenging research project for the teachers, requiring patience, understanding, and enthusiasm. Although enrolled in the same class, students, particularly the undergraduates, may have significantly different starting points and a broad variety of career objectives. Therefore the instructors not only has to be inspiring in lecturing, as a role model he also has to communicate to the students a sincere sense of understanding, respect, and appreciation in order to fully stimulate the students’ will of study. I will emphasize on teamwork as well as independent thinking in teaching, try to participate in their discussions, and offer to be a friend willing to help both within and outside the class. I shall feel satisfied to see that, when leaving the class, the students will carry away not only knowledge and ability, but also an inspiring care that constitutes the spirit of the leadership in their future career. I included in teaching not only the existing technologies but also those that are under development. In this way the students can be motivated by seeing a live picture of the subject. combustion, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer
